About Murmur

This is the backstory of Murmur. Reading it is completely optional. You’ve been warned.
Murmur is a goat who became a priest when they inherited an old cathedral. Their family always preached the word of god and feared the devil, they made sure that everyone saw them as good people, so their destiny was to become a priest and adore the god of whatever religion they had. Murmur never cared too much about that, but cared about helping people and making them feel better, so it was happy about their future.
After Murmur started to live by itself and conducted their sermons in peace, someone became interested in them. At the beginning it was just daily assistance and private confessions, but those became more and more uncomfortable as this individual started to talk about uncomfortable topics to Murmur.
One day, this person locked Murmur inside their church and jumped them, ignorant of the fact that Murmur had a small dagger on his robe for domestic use. Murmur, not knowing what to do and remembering this individual for bothering them for quite some time, clumsily grabbed the dagger from the outside of their robe and by the sheer weight of their attacker being over them, they stabbed it in the heart.
As quickly as it happened, Murmur just took a life. Filled with fear and repent, they sat still on the ground in shock for the longest time.
Until another person came in.
This person claimed to know what just happened. He offered Murmur a way out that would spare them from god’s judgement and would make it be like nothing happened.
Of course, this person wanted Murmur too, but for other even darker reasons. He wanted to make a forbidden ritual using Murmur as sacrifice, which would free them from having to answer for their sins in exchange for their life and their soul.
Murmur, filled with fear and not really knowing what that meant, accepted. Anything would be better than a murderer priest, right? So the ritual commenced by drawing a pentagram around Murmur using their victims blood.
For Murmur, all of this was a blur, they couldn’t think clearly. They remember seeing a lot of people surrounding the ritual circle and whispering. At some point, a child put a stool and a bucket by their side and stand over the stool to start sawing their right horn.
As bleed became dripping from their horn stump and filled his eye and face, a just found hemophobia was triggered on Murmur and they became myotonic, which made them fell forward. This disturbed the ritual and made their horn smash on the ground, making it the blood sacrifice for the ritual and not Murmur itself.
The entity behind this ritual took the offering and found Murmur to be the owner of it. For some reason, this entity took a like on them and just “blessed” them, ending the ritual there.
This was not what the cultists who wanted to sacrifice Murmur wanted. The ritual was ruined and none of them got any benefit for it. As they mumbled and rushed to do something, Murmur stood with blood on the right side of their face, smiled, stretched their arms out to the sides and said with a big grim: “Now I see what you meant. No more judgement, no more false gods. I am free and I see the truth.”. After it, Murmur stayed still, and the room was filled with silence.
The cultists saw this as a sign to ran away. The sacrifice was a failure and their deity chose Murmur before them. They left them alone, without stealing or touching anything from Murmur’s church, as they didn’t want to anger whatever deity they were praying to.
Murmur, getting his senses back, started to question what happened: “Did I really said all that?”, “Did any of this actually happened?”, “Do I really see the truth?”, “Why did they left?”, “Why do I feel like something bad is about to happen but at the same time feel better than ever?”
They didn’t truly know it yet, but their life would never be the same after loosing their right horn.
The body of the person they killed before was still there, and for some reason, Murmur didn’t feared what could happen if anyone saw it or what god had to say about it. They just decided to bury it under the church and move on.
After this, Murmur tried to live their life not really knowing what the consequences of any of this were. They never opened the church again to conduct their habitual service (not to pray to god at least), and they cut all contact with their family. Murmur’s new life was one that they choose to live in solitude, for them sake and the ones who loved.
This was not the end of Murmur’s story. Because of this ritual, they were destined to live forever. People noticed that they weren’t aging and Murmur, being how they were, sometimes helped people in need. This made Murmur gain some notoriety. In time, Murmur got a flock of followers who saw him as a living deity, and the Cult of Murmur started to take shape.
I don’t expect anyone to read this. If you did, forgive my amazing English skills (/s), I’ve tried my best to keep Murmur neutral. Thank you for your interest in my dear Murmur and my work, and remember that their story is told through my music.
Love ya ;P <3
